Pathway

A 16-amino-acid peptide with an unusual origin: it is encoded not in the cell nucleus but inside the mitochondria’s own separate DNA — one of a small family of "mitochondrial-derived peptides" discovered relatively recently.

Mechanism

It activates AMPK, the cell’s master energy sensor — the same switch that exercise and calorie restriction flip. Under metabolic stress it also moves into the nucleus and influences gene expression, which suggests mitochondria signal to the rest of the cell far more actively than was once assumed.

Studied for

  • Insulin sensitivity and metabolic health
  • Obesity and age-related metabolic decline
  • Exercise capacity — sometimes described as an exercise mimetic

Where the evidence stands

Compelling mouse and cell research from academic groups, and an interesting observation that a MOTS-c variant is associated with longevity in some Japanese populations. Human interventional data is essentially absent.

Typical protocol

Dosing is individualised and set by your supervising clinician at intake. Published human dosing for this compound is not established; conservative titration and monitoring are part of every protocol.

Contraindications & cautions

An early-stage research compound with no human approval. No established dosing or safety profile. Pregnancy or breastfeeding.

Prescribed only after evaluation by your supervising provider, based on your history and bloodwork.

Important safety information
MOTS-c is dispensed as a compounded preparation under valid prescription only. Compounded medications are not FDA-evaluated for safety or efficacy. Report adverse events to your supervising clinician immediately. Keep refrigerated; keep out of reach of children.
